Wonka Mudpuff Caramelstuff

(It's been way too hot here in Perth to blog, so sorry for the radio silence. Today is only 33°C, so I can comfortably look at some lollies without it melting in my hands!)

Way back in August, Nestle's subbrand Wonka released a new flavour of their chocolate block to coincide with their Golden Ticket promotion they were running at the time.

Like in the novel, the finder of a Golden Ticket in their block of chocolate would win a trip to the chocolate factory. I wasn't lucky enough to find a ticket, but I did spend some time enjoying the detailed, multi-layered packaging promoting the competition.

The chocolate itself  doesn't immediately spike my interested. Described as 'creamy Wonka milk chocolate, chocolatey fudge, crispy puffs and golden caramel sauce', the combination sounds rather unoriginal, but tasty nonetheless. Crisped rice isn't hugely common here in Australia, so it's always nice to find another confectionery item with them.

The block uses the same mould as that used for Caramel Hat Trick - the first time I've seen Wonka reuse a mould. The little top hats are cute, with some upside down and the others right-side up. The milk chocolate used smells sweet and fresh, with a light milky note. Caramel is the most predominant aroma, its burnt sugar notes sweetened by the chocolate.

Unfortunately the filling is not contained to each piece; the fudge is shared between each square, something to note when storing for further chocolate satisfaction. The dark fudge takes up a considerable amount of space in each square, reaching all corners, while the caramel and rice puffs are constrained to the top hat shape. This keeps the proportions in tight control, however. The fudge is quite dense with a brownie-like flavour. The caramel is sweet, with a few burnt sugar notes but nothing extraordinary. Its presence keeps the fudge from becoming too strong, though. There are only a couple of rice puffs per square, to add a little texture contrast.

I was expecting a boring block, but this is really quite nice when I'm in the mood for something sweet. I loved the fudge, and hope to see it make an appearance in other flavours.

Score: 4 out of 5 jelly beans.

Wonka Mudpuff Caramelstuff is made in Australia. It contains milk, wheat and soy, and is made on equipment that processes peanuts and tree nuts.
