Haribo Turtles

The Haribo gummi domination of Australia continues with the introduction of these cuties: Turtles.

The German company is known world wide for their huge selection of gummi lollies. They cover everything, from gummi bears to sours and everything in between. The Turtles in this review are fruit flavoured with a jelly centre. The same mould is used for the three different flavours; an adorable little turtle about 3.5cm long, 2.5cm wide and 2cm tall. Each one is sanded with a sour finish, with an opaque aerated base and translucent top, tinted in the flavour colour.

There are three flavours in the bad, although the packaging isn't kind enough to identify them. One is yellow with a green centre, the second is pink with the red centre, and the third a white/peach colour with orange centre. The first, the yellow/green, has a nice, mildly tangy flavour to its sand that complements the lemon flavour of the gummi. It's a little bit tart, but quite pleasant and refreshing. The centre is on the sweet side, and reminds me of apple flavour with its juiciness.

The red pieces I think were raspberry, though it might be a stretch - although the notes were jammy and sweet, the tanginess was only coming from the sanding and not the gummi itself. There's a definite medicinal note at the beginning, but it soon fades to the bold and warm jam flavours. The red centre is likely cherry, though it had such a strong medicinal note I could barely taste anything else. This was not a pleasant piece at all.

The final piece, the orange ones, are much nicer. The gummi has a mild citrus flavour, but I can't place it - it could be orange or tangerine, or something else completely like peach. Either way, the sour sanding complements it nicely. Unfortunately the centre is a bit a average; it's orange, but it's a little sour in a way that does no favours. It tastes a bit old, like overripe fruit.

Haribo uses lots of fruit and plant concentrates in this product (the ingredients list includes safflower, spirulina, apple, radish, sweet potato, carrot, blackcurrant, hibiscus) as well as other flavours, so it's anyone's guess as to what flavour they were going for in the red and orange pieces. But I think I'll stick with the yellow and green pieces.
