Cadbury Limited Edition Dairy Milk Strawberries & Creme

After being teased with this new release (and it's brethren Crackle and Toffee Crisp) back in May, I'm glad to say it's finally in my hot little hands! Cadbury's limited edition Dairy Milk Strawberries & Creme is an odd little fellow, and very different to the current Cadbury products you can find on your shelves at the moment. Let's dive in and have a look!

I didn't want to start this review off with a negative, but let me explain why I've called this release odd. As is common for Cadbury, blocks in this 120g size (a smidge larger than our 'small blocks' at 100g, and our larger blocks at 200g+) and marked 'limited edition' are usually an imported job lot - and this blocks' country of origin is Germany. There's nothing wrong with imported flavours, of course; it keeps the variety exciting, and allows Cadbury to test out a new flavour without having to commit to new machines or adjusting the runs in the factory to produce a potential flop. Still, a part of me prefers my chocolate made in country! Support for local jobs and all that. And job lots can be frustrating for consumers - they find a flavour that they love, and then suddenly it's not available any more. (Story of my life!)

Anyway, let's take a look at the block proper. The wrapper is illustrated in landscape style, and features the new lowercase Dairy Milk logo that has been slowly introduced over the past year or so. There's an illustration of a chocolate strawberry, decorated with pink and white. The bar is described as 'Dairy Milk milk chocolate with a delicious strawberry & creme flavoured centre'. (That's another oddity; in the UK the filling is described as yoghurt, but the Australian wrapper makes no mention of the word at all. You'll see why I find this curious a little lower.)

The block is a different moulded shape to what we are used to in Australia, and is made up of 8 x 3 rectangles. Although the outer chocolate is Dairy Milk, I am sure it will be the European recipe, rather than the 'Australia-proof' recipe we use here that withstands heat a little better. The chocolate is infused with strawberry flavour from the filling, so I was unable to do a taste test to prove the theory. Oh well.

The centre takes up 49% of the bar, and similar to the Dairy Milk with Oreo LE we saw late last year, the filling reaches all the pieces; it's not individually broken up like we tend to see here. The filling is quite firm and pale pink in colour, speckled with red dots. It has a very strong, sweet scent that is evident upon opening the wrapper. I found the texture of the filling to be like a very firm fondant. (When I first heard about this block, I expected it to be a soft fondant filling, like Peppermint or Raspberry and Lemonade.) It's quite a curious flavour on its own; tangy and slightly berry-ish. With the chocolate to add a bit of sweetness, it's strangely appealing, even though I find the tanginess out of place in a chocolate bar. I mentioned earlier that in the UK the wrapper calls the filling yoghurt, and I totally get it. If you've tried Ritter-Sport chocolate, they have a variety or two with a yoghurt filling which has that tanginess going on, so you'll probably like this as well. I really would call this block strawberry yoghurt flavoured, but that might not go down so well with the general public!

I'd say definitely give this a try, even if it's just for curiosity's sake. It's so different to anything we've seen from Cadbury, and also from any other manufacturer available in Australia, too.

Score: 4 out of 5 jelly beans.

Cadbury Limited Edition Dairy Milk Strawberries & Creme is made in Germany. It contains milk and soy.

  1. Oooh I saw this in the UK last year and was intrigued. I'm so pleased we get to try it now! I'm wondering though, does it bear any resemblance to our Dairy Milk strawberry bubbly? Obviously the texture looks different, but taste wise? I am totally addicted to that sweet artificial strawberry flavour!

    1. Hey Anon,
No, there's little similarity between the flavour of this and of Bubbly Strawberry. There's a definite tangy note to the filling of Strawberries & Creme that leans towards strawberry yoghurt, while Bubbly Strawberry is more strawberry milk and sweeter.
I've seen this block available just about everywhere for about $2, so pick one up and give it a try - I'd love to know what you think of it!

  2. They've brought these out again here in the UK this year, and I'm sure they're not as nice as they were last year. Less creamy.

    1. Oh, that's interesting, Kev! From what I could see they looked the same, just with a packaging update. I wonder what the reason was for a recipe change. Was the original badly received?

    2. Not that I know of! I'm wondering if it might be due to the increasing use of palm oil in their chocolate. None of it tastes as good as it used to, at least to my tastebuds.
